WHAT IS A TONIC HERB?
Tonic herbs were first mentioned in the Emperor Shen Nong's Classic of Herbal Medicine around 2,000 years ago. This text was a culmination of thousands of years of traditional herbal wisdom from the many healers in ancient China.
The text classifies herbs according to three distinct categories:
Superior herbs (also known as imperial herbs) - these are the herbs that can be consumed daily with benefits accumulating over time. They were used daily by the wisest and wealthiest people, including the Emperors.
Regular herbs - these are the herb that can be used to treat the ailing, these herbs should not be used for an extended period of time as there is a potential for long-term negative side effects.
Inferior herbs - These herbs are primarily considered to be toxic. Inferior herbs should only be used for a short period of time to get a powerful and fast result when treating a serious illness acutely.
Luckily, tonic herbs fall into the “superior herb” category. These are the herbs that are collectively known to be safe, gentle, well-tolerated and effective. Tonic herbs do not force the body to change, but rather work with it to adapt, allowing a measured, nourishing and normalising effect to unfold within the body and its systems.Traditionally consumed daily to promote longevity and prevent illness, these remedies offer nourishment to the vital organs, strengthen essential functions and improve quality of life, without negative side effects. Tonic herbs are further categorised as Yin, Yang, Qi and Blood tonics.
Many of the tonic herbs also fall into a category of foods called 'adaptogens' as they aid the body to modulate one or many of its functions.
For a herb to be classified as an adaptogen it must embody certain characteristics; Its consumption must not cause harm or place additional stress on the body. It must promote healing within the body via a non-specific action, providing support for all of the body’s vital systems, including the nervous system, endocrine system and immune system. It must be adaptive in nature, assisting the body to overcome any physical, psychological or environmental stressors
Tonic herbs are not a trend. They are grounded in thousands of years of empirical evidence. Their safety has been verified in modern times with scientific research, confirming the effects the ancient herbal scientists monitored over thousands of years of practice. You can read more about them here.
what is a medicinal mushroom?
Medicinal mushrooms are unmatched in their ability to build immunity and adaptability within the body and are among some of the world’s most prized tonic herbs (see above). In the wild, medicinal mushrooms are tree dwelling, favouring the bark of the particular trees in which to grow. Chaga thrives on the bark of the birch tree, we source it wild, it can’t be wild harvested like our Reishi. Wild Reishi is extremely rare and insanely expensive, we consciously harvest ours on wild oak as this enables us to supply you with a herb that boasts the most robust and adaptive medicinal profile possible.
This is our intention and focus for all our SuperFeast products.
Many other companies, nearly all who occupy the market today, supply medicinal mushrooms that are grown on a cereal medium, usually a grain such as rice, this leads to a false reading when we start delving into the world of active constituents such as polysaccharides and beta glucans, but that’s a conversation for another time!
THE Superfeast WAY
We only want to work with the best herbs. The herbs that are potent , rooted in history and lore, grown with their feet in the soil and the sun on their faces. We want our mushrooms to experience their potential as the connectors and unifiers of the forest before we ingest them, so we can take on those qualities too. Head over here, to see our founder Mason, at the source in rural, wild China, sourcing SuperFeast herbs.
10:1 POWDERED EXTRACTS, YES PLEASE
We sell powdered extracts of tonic herbs and medicinal mushrooms (which are technically tonic herbs but this seems to confuse everyone, so we’ll keep ‘em separated for clarity). What is a ‘powdered extract,’ you ask? Great question. A powdered extract is basically the end result of taking a bunch of herbs and boiling and/or tincturing them for a while. The powder comes about after the resultant extract is dried and pushed through an ultra-fine sieve. Our extracts are 10:1, which means it takes 10kgs of herb to make 1kg of our extracts.
100% PURE HERBS ONLY
We don’t add any crap to our products. Ever. Next time you grab your favourite health supplement, take a look at the ingredients. Look past the flashy label. Do you know what all of them are and what they do? You’ll often see a lot of fillers and bulking agents - you’re basically paying for rice flour, a lot of the time. We don’t play that confusing game. You can trust our products. SuperFeast products are always comprised of the purest, highest quality, all-natural ingredients. We use spring water and organic rice alcohol to extract our herbs and have independent test results for all our medicinal mushrooms and tonic herbs that we can provide upon request. Never any fillers, starches, excipients, colours, sweeteners or preservatives. Ever.
EARTH FRIENDLY AND KIND
We are committed to being earth friendly across all our practices, read more here :) We keep it ethical, always. All our medicinal mushrooms and herbs are vegan (with the exception of Beauty Blend, which contains pearl and Deer Antler), and where possible, carefully sourced from wild regions of China or Inner Mongolia (see each product page for specific origins).
Our mushrooms are never raised in a monoculture on artificial mushroom ‘food,' and we source to keep them as close to their ancestral roots as possible (see Di Dao). We ensure our herbs are grown without the use of harmful pesticides or herbicides and our sourcing practices are leaving an abundance of herbs growing sustainably for the next season and next generation of herb nerds.
